1. 完形填空考試首先是測試考生對篇章的理解能力。雖然所給出的文章被抽去了20個詞，但是整篇文章的內容仍是可以理解的。如果考生不能理解文章內容，就難以將正確的詞填入文中。這也就是完型填空題與以單句形式考核詞匯和語法的實體的根本區別。由此可見，考生在作題時必須時刻從上下文考慮，部應該只看到所添的詞在短語或句子內是否可行。因此，在作題時最好將全文通讀一下，了解了全文的意識以后在作題。
　　2. 完形填空考試還測試考生使用詞匯和語法結構的能力。文章中留出的每一個空格要求填入一個詞。考試大綱規定：“填空的詞項包括結構詞和實義詞”。結構詞(也稱虛詞，有代詞、冠詞、介詞、連詞、關系詞等)主要是表示語法結構關系的，在選用結構詞時便需要考慮在語法上是否恰當。對實義詞(名詞、形容詞、數詞、動詞和副詞)的選擇既要看其意思用在句中是否得當，也要看它與其他詞的搭配關系是否合適。
　　完形填空的一般性做題規律
　　中心主題原則：考生應充分利用段首句提供的信息，去挖掘文章的思路，尋找文章的脈絡與線索;
　　復現、改寫原則：由于完形填空的文章是一個意義相關聯的語篇，圍繞一個話題論述因此在行文中詞語的重復、替代、復現和同現現象是不可避免的。根據這個原則，某一個空格所對應的答案很可能就是在上下文中復現或同現的相關詞，考生可以根據這些詞之間的有機聯系來確定答案;
　　熟詞辟義原則： 考生熟悉的單詞詞義，但根據文章的上下文中確是例外一層含義;
　　代入、排除原則：分析備選答案之間的異同，將自己認識的選項帶到原文中，從而排除干擾項選出正確答案。
